The Caryatids/Parthenon/Athens


The world famous Caryatids, at the Erechtheion Temple next to Parthenon in Athens. Originally there were six of them. One was stolen from Lord Elgin along with the Parthenon Sculptures and is now in the British Museum. The other five, are in the new Acropolis Museum and at the original site, there are six replicas.

There is an old legend, saying that when the one Caryatid was removed from Lord Elgin and was temporarily stored at the foothill of Acropolis waiting to be departed to England, the other five were crying for their lost sister and the residents of Plaka could hear them mourning in the night...
